Asshai is a land in Essos far to the east of the Dothraki Sea. From the Wiki of Ice and Fire:
Asshai is a mysterious port city located in the far south-east of Essos, where the Ash river meets the Jade Sea at its eastern exit, the Saffron Straits. Asshai is on the southernmost edge of a mountainous peninsula known as the Shadow Lands, thus the city is often called Asshai by the Shadow or Asshai-by-the-Shadow. To go to Asshai can be described as to “pass beneath the shadow”, and the area of the Shadow Lands and Asshai are sometimes referred to simply as the Shadow.

Note: For the sake of simplicity, the following changes have been made to the usual phonetic descriptions of various IPA characters:
- “Labial” is used as a cover term for bilabial and labio-dental.
- [ǝ] has been placed in the Open Mid row.
- To shorten the tables, “Approximant” is used as a cover term for approximants, glides, taps, and trills.
- Where a consonant or pair of consonants appears in two columns, it means that place distinction is unimportant for the phoneme(s) in question.
